The William and Elizabeth Jenkinson Fulton Family
Of Waukegan, ILL.

The picture below is of my Great Great Grandparents William (1833-1909) and Elizabeth Jenkinson Fulton (1838-1923).  Both born in Ireland, met and married in Waukegan, Ill. on July 4, 1857. They lived most of the lives in Waukegan, Ill. They retired to Spencer, Iowa about 1903 to assist their widower son James Albert and his three young children.   They are buried in Spencer, Iowa. They had nine children all of whom married and had children. They had 38 Grandchildren, 38 known Great Grandchildren and 47 known Great Great Grandchildren. The picture is undated, but it may have been taken at their 50th wedding anniversary celebration in Waukegan on July 4, 1907. See and compare to the 1907 Waukegan Fulton-Jenkinson Reunion Photo.

   Additions and corrections are welcome

A few words on conflicting information:
Not all of the information about our William Fulton indicates he was born in Ireland.  From the 1880 census on, individuals were asked where their parents were from.  I checked the records from 1900 – 1930 for all nine of William’s children and although most of the entries indicate Father from Ireland, sometimes they indicate Scotland, sometimes New York, and twice indicate Illinois.   In addition, two short biographies I have of William’s son John Robert of Waukegan indicate William was born in Scotland.  I don’t think these different answers were just made up.  There are logical reasons for the differing information that also provide clues to our William Fulton’s background.   It could be that some of the references to Scotland or New York were simply based on information the children thought was correct but was not.   Another reason may stem from the way census information was collected.   A census taker came to your home and asked you questions and they wrote down the answers.   The differing information could be simply based on how the census taker asked the question.  William Fulton was born in Ireland, but per obituaries and other family stories came to New York when young man.   Fulton as a family name comes from Scotland.   So if the census taker asked “Where was your Father born?”, the correct answer would be Ireland.   But if the census taker asked “Where was your Father’s Family from?”, the correct answer could be Scotland.   And if the census taker asked “Where was your Father from?”, a correct answer could be New York, since New York is where William Fulton lived before coming to Waukegan.

Another reason for the discrepancies could be based on ethnic attitudes and identities of the times.  Most immigrants to America from Ireland from the time of the great potato famine in the 1840’s onwards were Catholic “native” Irish.   Others were Protestant Irish from the North of Ireland who were mostly ethnically Scottish.  They were descendents of Scots who began migrating to Northern Ireland in the 1600’s and identified themselves as a separate ethnic and cultural group that became known as the Scotch-Irish or more correctly Scots-Irish.  So the references to William being born in Scotland may have been a slight altering of the truth to illustrate that the family was of Protestant Scottish background and not Catholic Irish.
