Nelson - Ogren Family: Sweden to America

My maternal Grandmother was Helen Marie Larsen. She was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 23, 1900 and died in Franklin Park, Illinois on October 22, 1997. She married my Grandfather Albert Emmanuel Nelson on June 25, 1919 in Chicago. The had six children including my Mother Daisy.

The picture below is of my Grandmother's Larsen Family taken about 1915

Standing l-r: Louise, Ingolf, Ernie, Olie, Dagmar

Seated l-r: Esther, My Great Grandmother Anna Anderson Larsen (5/30/1869-4/13/1947), My Grandmother Helen Marie.

My Great Grandfather Andreas (Andrew) Larsen was born in Norway in November 1866 and came to Chicago in 1888. Great Grandmother Anna was also born in Norway and came to America in 1889 and shortly after they were married. I suspect they knew each other in Norway and Andreas came first to get settled and sent for Anna. Andreas was murdered after trying to help out in a domestic dispute of a neighbor on September 14, 1904. Great Grandmother had to work and so she had to put my Grandmother, her brother Ernie and sister Louise in an orphanage. The older children stayed at home as did the baby Dagmar. My Grandmother remembers waiting for Sunday, the day her mother would take the train to visit them in the orphanage.

They met at a dance. They first lived with Al's parents in Hutchinson Street in Chicago where son Robert and eldest daugther Helen were born. They moved to Franklin Park, Ill about 1923 where Grandpa Nelson built a house on Gustav Street. There the rest of the children were born; Ruth, Dorothy, Daisy, and Violet. They had 18 Grandchildren.
