In early 2007 I spent about a month visting the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) in Belfast, Ireland surveying the existing Church of Ireland and Presbyterian Church records for Northern County Down and Southern County Antrim trying the find a birth record for my Great Great Grandfather William Fulton who came to American before 1850. Records in America indicate he was born on January 1, 1833 either in or near Belfast. I did not find a matching record for him, but in the process I tried to note all Fultons that I found in my search.
Below is a transcript of my notes from searching many of these Church Registers. I searched all the Church of Ireland and Presbyerian Parish Registers in PRONI for Northern County Down and Southern County Antrim with records existing before 1835. The below is alphabetical by parish name. I have included enough location information such that the reader should be able to locate the approximate area of the parish on the Antrim of Down maps via links on the left. There is a lot of data below. To search, try selecting and copying into a word processor and then using the find function.
See also Co. Tyrone and Londonderry Fulton Information . This is a link to a site outside this one and contains downloadable excel spreadsheet transcripts of Fultons found in the 1901 Ireland Census of Counties Tyrone and Londonderry as well as other misc Fulton information from these counties.
Aghaderg CI Parish, County Down. Aghaderg Church of Ireland Parish is located in east central County Down on the border with County Armagh. Records exist from 1825 - 1848. The records from 1825 – 1831 were very faint and almost impossible to read via microfilm copy I viewed. Fultons I found include:
David, son of John and Isabella Fulton of Drumsallagh, born Dec. 5, and baptized Dec. 22, 1833
Jane Eliza, daughter of John and Isabella Fulton of Drumsallagh, baptized Nov. 8, 1835
William, son of Charles and Faithful Fulton, baptized Sept. 11, 1836. A witness is listed: Wesly Fulton
Annahilt Presbyterian Parish of County Down. Annahilt Presbyterian Parish is located in the north central part of County Down in the same area as the Church of Ireland Parish of Hillsborough and just a mile or so northwest of the Church of Ireland Parish of Annahilt. The Parish is just a short distance south of Lisburn. The records exist from 1780 but many were unreadable via the microfilm copy I reviewed at Proni. I found the following which I made out as Fultons:
Samuel, son of Samuel Fulton baptized April 15, 1790.
Andrew, son of Joseph Falton (sp) of Drumlaugh baptized march 5, 1815
John, son of James Fulton of Drumlough baptized Jan. 26, 1818
John, son of William Falton (sp) of Drumlough baptized on June 21, 1822
William Fulton married Mary Brown, both of Annahilt Parish, on Sept. 21, (the year for this and all entries for a number a pages was unreadable, probably about 1829.)
Ballymaccarrett Presbyterian Parish, County Down. Ballymaccarrett Presbyterian Parish in County Down is located in the north central part of County Down bordering County Antrim and within the area covered by the Knockbreda Church of Ireland Parish.
Records exist from 1827 to 1869. I reviewed the registers from 1827 through 1838 and found the following Fultons:
John, son of Andrew Fulton and Margaret McCartnay was baptized on May ?, 1835
Alexander, son of Samuel Fulton and Rebecca Gilbert was baptized August 7, 1837.
Banbridge Presbyerian Church of County Down. Banbridge Presbyterian Church is located in the west central part of County Down within the same area as the Church of Ireland Parish of Seapatrick very near the border with County Armagh. I reviewed the original document of a very clear and readable copy of now lost original Parish registers for Banbridge Presbyterian Church covering 1756-1794. I also reviewed additional original documents, also apparently copies of lost original registers covering 1814 to 1971. In addition to the following Fultons I found, there was a large clan of McWilliams in the Parish. McWilliams was the maiden name on the death certificate of my GR GR GF William Fulton 1833-1909. In 1756-59 there were 5 adult McWilliams men listed as fathers in the birth register and a total of 61 McWilliam births recorded between 1756 and 1794, 33 males and 28 females. Unfortunately none match what family records indicate is the 1792 or 1793 birth of my 3G GM Margaret McWilliam. I also found the following Fultons:
Elizabeth, daughter to Alexander Fulton by Jane Masterton of Edenderry, baptized on April 6, 1788.
Alexander, son to Alexander Fulton by Jane Masterton of Edenderry, baptized on July 8, 1790.
Elizabeth, daughter to Alexander Fulton by Jane Masterton of Edenderry, baptized on March 17, 1793.

Sarah Ann, daughter of Thomas Coulter and Agnes Fulton of Drumnagally, baptized on May 21, 1817.
Robert, son of William Savage and Jane Fulton of Edenderry, baptized on Nov. 19, 1823.
Carnmoney County Antrim Fultons: There is a large group of Fultons in the Parish of Carnmoney who have been there since very early in the Scottish settlement of Northern Ireland. Below are records I found in PRONI regarding these Fultons. Carmoney Presbyterian Parish Registers:

I also looked at the earliest vestry book of Carmoney Presbyerian Parish 1708-1726 and found the following two Fulton entries in a list of Testimonials received:
James Fulton from Donagore, March 19, 1710. Donagore is located a mile of so NW of Carnmoney.
Henry Fulton from Templepatrick, May 12, 1715. Templepatrick Parish borders Carnmoney on the SW.
The James Fulton entry place name was truncated in the record as Donag….. There could be other place names that fit such as Donaghadee in County Down.
Carnmoney Fultons in 1789 Tithe Book. I reviewed an existing Tithe Book for Carmoney Parish from 1789 and extracted the several Fultons found there. This is essentially a property tax list. In Ireland, Parishes are subdivided into often very small land units called townlands.
Carmoney Parish, Carmoney Townland:
Alexander Fulton, 2 and ¼ acres of oats.
Carmoney Parish, Drumadrough Townland:
John Fulton, 2 acres of Oata, 1 horse, 1 cow

Wills of Jonathan Fulton and James Fulton of Carnmoney:
Most Irish wills before 1922 were destroyed in the bombing of the Public Records Office in Dublin. However, a relatively small number of Wills which for various reasons had been copied still exist. Two such Wills for Fultons in Carnmoney exist and are summarized below:
Will of Jonathan Fulton of Carnmoney, County Antrim dated April 8, 1851 and proven June 3, 151. The will names sons Samuel, James, John and William and also leaves legacies to daughters: Mary Barrett, Jane Fulton, Eliza Fulton, and Sarah Fulton. It also names a grandson Jonathan Fulton of Windyhill and leaves son William of Windyhill an interest in the pew in Carnmoney Meeting House. The executor if Joseph Barrett of Ballyhartfield (probably a son-in-law).
Will of James Fulton of Carnmoney dated Feb. 4, 1860. The date of death is unclear, but it appears to have been before Sept. 1860. This James appears to be the son of Jonathan above. James dies without direct heirs. He mentions brothers John William and Samuel in that order. He also leaves a legacy for “desceased brother Hugh’s children”. These children are not named. He also leaves 5 pounds to sisters and sisters-in-law: Martha Fulton, Mary Barrett, Sarah McKegherty, Jane Chapman, and Eliza London. He also names a cousin William Rodgers of Glengormly.
Carrickfergus CI Church of County Antrim. Carrickfergus Church of Ireland Parish is located in the southeastern part of County Antrim just northeast of Carnmoney Parish and on the coast of Belfast Lough. Donaghcloney CI Parish. Donaghcloney Church of Ireland Parish is located in NW County Down just north of Tullylish Parish on the border of County Armagh. Records exist from 1772. Baptism records exist from 1784 to 1871 and marriage records from 1784 to 1845. There were 4500 baptisms recorded from 1784 to 1845. Some of the records, particularly before 1816 were very faint and unreadable. I found the following Fultons:
Anne, daughter of James Fulton of Ballymacorm by Mary M’Hwrath, his wife, baptized June 13, 1789.
*** the following entry is not a Fulton. I am listing it here as the names clearly indicate a connection of some sort to Fultons mentioned here: Rutherford, son of William Cochran and Sarah Curry of Listlycurran, born April 14, 1802 and baptized on May 20, 1802.
John Fulton of the Parish of Hillsboro married Mary Gentry of Dromore on March 2, 1805.

Drumbeg CI Parish. Drumbeg Parish is located in north central County Down just to the west and bordering Drumbo Parish. Records exist from 1807. I found them very faint and very hard to read so I only research a few years from 1823 to 1836. I found one Fulton:
Margaret, daughter of John and Margaret Fulton of Drumbeg was baptized on Feb. 5, 1832. John Fulton’s occupation is listed as laborer.
Drumbo CI Parish. Drumbo Church of Ireland Parish is located in northern County Down bordering County Antrim and just a mile of so east of Lisburn. Records exist from 1791. I searched the records from 1791 to 1841. Many of the records on microfilm were too faint to read so there are likely more Fultons than I list here.
Elizabeth, daughter of George Greer and Grace Fulton his wife of Balicowan was baptized on April 8, 1792.
William, son of Joseph Chapman and Peggy Fulton his wife of Drumbridge was baptized on Sept. 24, 1792. The entry was very hard to read and may not have been Fulton.

Drumbo Presbyterian Parish. See location for Drumbo CI Parish. Records exist since 1707, but only fragments exist before 1765. Records are fairly complete and readable from 1765 through 1792 and then a gap until 1827. Some of the records are very hard to read and some pages in the microfilm copy I reviewed were out of sequence, but most of the existing records were readable. From proximity and naming patterns it seems highly likely this group of Fultons is a branch of the Lisburn Fulton group. I found the following Fultons:
Richard Fulton, son of John Fulton baptized August 12, 1707
David Fulton, son of James Fulton baptized October 3, 1719
Rainy Fulton, son of Joseph Fulton baptized October 31, 17?65?, the year was difficult to place and read.

Sept. 30, 1769 – This day Mr. Fulton got in all his oats
The following I found in scanning the Drumbo Presbyterian Register from 1827 to 1835. To get an idea of the size of the parish, there were 114 total baptisms in 1828.
Mary Hawthorne, daughter of Robert Hawthorne and Rachel Fulton of ?Corgycray? was born on Jan. 1, 1826 and baptized on Feb. 21, 1828
William Hawthorne, son of Robert Hawthorne and Rachel Fulton of ?Craigeroy? (very hard to read the place name), born on April 21, 1829 and baptized on Sept. 19, 1829.
William John Fulton, son of John Fulton and Eliza Davis of ?Dughiley? born April 1, 1832 and baptized on April 29, 1832.
Eliza McKee, daughter of James McKee and Jane Fulton, born on Oct. 22, 1834 and baptized Nov. 13, 1834.
** note: With 7 Fulton males baptized in the parish from 1765 – 1789 it seems likely that much of this Fulton clan had moved out of the area by the early 1800’s considering only one Fulton Father is recorded in the baptisms from 1827-1835.**
Glenavy CI Parish, County Antrim. Glenavy Church of Ireland Parish is located in the southwest part of County Antrim just west of Derryaghy. Records exist back to 1707 and most are readable. I found the following Fultons. Fellow researcher Trevor Fulton may have found a few additional Fultons in these registers that I missed.

Killinchy NSP Presbyerian Church. Killinchy NSP Presbyterian Church is located in west central Count Down on the western coast of Stangford Lough within the same area covered by the Killinchy CI Parish. Old copies of original parish records now lost exist from 1812 to 1854. They were relatively clear, complete and easy to read. I found several Fulton families here that clearly appear to be a branch of the Lisburn Fultons. See the link to Overview of The Fultons of Lisburn by T.C. Hope 1903 for the details.
Knockbredgda CI Parish. Knockbreda Church of Ireland Parish is located in far north central County Down just to the east of Drumbo Parish and bordering the Belfast area of County Antrim. Records exist from 1785. I only reviewed the registers from 1825 to 1835. The records before 1825 were very faint and almost impossible to read on the microfilm copy I reviewed. I found the following Fulton entries:
Joseph, son of Joseph and Matilda Johnson Fulton of Ballymagin baptized June 14, 1829
Robert, son of Robert and Margaret Hannay Fulton of Ballykackmore baptized August 22, 1830.
Jane, daughter of Joseph and Matilda Johnston Fulton of Ballymagin baptized Feb. 20, 1832.

Lurgan like Lisburn was active in the early days of the linen industry in Northern Ireland. Records exist from 1746 to 1775. Then there is a gap and records resume in 1801. I found the following Fultons here:
John, son of John Fulton, born June 24, 1768 and baptized on June 26, 1768.

Sources indicates records existed back to 1692, but the copy I reviewed contained only a few scattered entries up until 1785 and with various large gaps after 1785 until 1845. I found the following Fultons:
Henry, son of John Fulton of Ballylong baptized Mary 15, 1791.
Thomas, son of Thomas and Rebecca Fulton of Ballykeel baptized October 10, 1831.
Millisle Presbyterian Parish. Millisle Presbyterian Parish is located on the NE coast of County Down in an area known as The Ards. Records exist from 1773. Unlike most parish registers which record one of both parents names and often their residence location and sometimes their occupation, many of these entries contained only the name of the child and the date of baptism. I found the following Fultons in these records:
Agnes, daughter of Robert Fulton of Donaghadee was baptized on July 14, 1774.
Archibald Fulton was baptized on Oct. 26, 1777.

Dr John Walker’s Register of Births, 1816-1846:
The same Fulton Families from above in Millisle Parish are also represented an interesting document I reviewed at PRONI in Belfast. The document is a Register of Births keep by a private physician, Dr. John Walker of the Parish of Donaghadee in County Down from 1816 to 1846. Donaghadee Church of Ireland Parish is located on the NE coast of County Down and overlays the area covered by a number of Presbyterian Churches including Millisle. The following Fultons are recorded in Dr. Walkers register:
Oct. 3, 1816, Mrs. Arch’d Fulton of Ballybutte, a daughter (this would be daughter Ann Park Fulton from above Millisle register)
Nov. 14, 1818, Mrs. Arch’d Fulton of Ballybutte, a son (this would be son Hugh Fulton from above Millisle register).
Oct. 5, 1820, Mrs. Archibald Fulton of Ballybuttle, a son (this would be son William from above Millisle register)

Rosemary Street NSP Church, Belfast. NSP is short for Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church, a splinter group of the Presbyterian Church. Records exist with a typescript and index from 1756 to 1842. I found the following Fultons here:

St. Anne’s (Shankill) CI Church, Belfast. The St. Anne’s Church of Ireland Parish in Belfast is large with records available dating back to 1745. There are indexes on microfilm but even these indexes were hard to read in many places. I did not search all these records, so there are likely more Fultons than listed below.
From the St. Anne’s index of Burials:
August 27, 1752, John Fulton son to William Fulton buried
August 19, 1756, Sarah Fulton, dau to Thomas Fulton buried
August 24, 1761, Margaret Fulton, dau to Thomas Fulton buried
June 26, 1762, Mary Fulton, dau to Thomas Fulton buried
May 15, 1765, William Fulton, son to Thomas Fulton buried.
January 6, 1787, Thomas Fulton was buried.
From the index to Marriages:
November 21, 1788, James Fulton and Mary Marshall, both of the Parish of Carnmoney, were married by license by the Revd. Stewart Patterson, Vicar of the Parish of Carnmoney.
** My Note: I may have missed some, but I found no Fulton Baptisms from 1745 to 1824. It is not unusual to find Burials of Fultons in Church of Ireland Registers and find no Baptisms. This is because Presbyterians did not usually keep records of burials and the Church of Ireland, acting in a civil capacity did record burials. So it is likely the William Fulton and Thomas Fulton families noted in the 1700’s burial records of St. Anne’s CI Parish were members of some nearby Presbyterian Parish.
For Baptisms and Marriages from 1824 I recorded details only for a few entries from 1830 to 1838. For the rest I only noted the name and page number in the index.
