The Photos above are all of William Thomas Fulton: l-r: Photo 1 about 1865 age 2; Photo 2 probably about age 17; Photo 3 probably about age 30; Photo 4 probably about age 50.

William Thomas Fulton was my Great Grandfather.  He was known as Will.  He was born in Waukegan, ILL., on April 2, 1863.  He was baptized at Christ Church in Waukegan on July 5, 1863.  William’s occupation listed on the 1880 census at age 17 while still living at home was Photographer’s Apprentice.  However, his occupation in the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census is listed as Carpenter, undoubtedly learned from his Father.  William Married Barbara Louise Robling in 1894.  I do not have the exact date nor do I know where.  Their marriage is not found in the Illinois online marriage index.  They lived their lives in Chicago.  The following is a list of the addresses of the places they lived in Chicago  provided by my Dad’s cousin Shirley Fulton Jackson:
1895: Wood Street Chicago
1898: Huron Street Chicago
1900 - 1912: 268 North Lawndale Street, Chicago, in the Garfield Park area. Howard's first pay card Sept 1911 says home address is 629 North Lawndale.
1912 - 1919: 707 Hamlin Av. Chicago
1920 - 1923: McDicker Av., Chicago
1923 - 1942: 5958 Ohio Street, Chicago

My Great Grandmother Barbara Louise Robling was born on August 8, 1871 in Waukegan, ILL, the 4th of 12 children of Adam Robling and Catherine Scherer.  Adam and Catherine were both born in SW Germany near the Alsace-Lorraine area by the French border.  Adam was born in 1829 and arrived alone on the Ship Arcadia into the port of New Orleans on December 24, 1850.  He was a “cooper”, which is a barrel or cask maker.   He died in Waukegan in 1894.  There is a theory as of yet unproven that Adam was related to the Robling’s of central Pennsylvania who came to America about the same time as Adam.  The Pennsylvania Roblings produced Washington Robling who became a noted bridge builder, building the famous Brooklyn Bridge.  Catherine Scherer was born September 22, 1842, a daughter of Jacob Scherer a brother to the founders of Schererville, Indiana.  Catherine died in Waukegan on March 27, 1920.  She and Adam and four of their sons are buried in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery located right next to Oakwood Cemetery in Waukegan.  Barbara Louise’s birth is recorded in the St Joseph’s Catholic Church Register in Waukegan.  She was baptized on August 13, 1871.  I have more information on the Robling and Scherer families, but that is another project.  Anyone with questions about the Robling’s or Scherer’s are welcome to contact me.

Adam Robling and Catherine Scherer had at least 23 grandchildren.

William Thomas Fulton was an Episcopalian and Barbara Louise Robling was Catholic.  According to family stories they originally decided to raise sons as Episcopalian and daughters as Catholic but Great Grandma soon decided that would not be practical and agreed to raise them Episcopalian.  She apparently never let go of her Catholic faith as after William Thomas’ death in 1939, she began attending a Catholic Church.   Barbara Louise Robling Fulton died on April 24, 1948.

William Thomas Fulton was killed by a drunk driver on September 12, 1939 at the intersection of Austin Avenue and Diversey in Chicago at 1:30 A.M.   Anthony Pellikan was arrested on charges of manslaughter.   According to family stories, the accident occurred near William’s residence at 5958 Ohio Street and that one of more of William’s sons were there shortly and held Mr. Pellikan, who was drunk, for police.  At the trial, when asked if he had been drinking that night, Mr. Pellikan said no.   This apparently infuriated Robert, William’s second son, who approached Mr. Pellikan outside the court and knocked him cold, after which my Grandfather had to help convince the police not to arrest his brother.  I don’t know the disposition of the case.

William and Barbara are buried in Ridgewood Cemetery, Cook County, ILL.  Section 8, lot 726.   They bought the plot on June 4, 1937.   Ridgewood Cemetery is located at 9900 Milwaukee Ave., Des Plaines, ILL.  Also buried there are their daughter Carol Mae and son Gardner.

l-r: Robert C. Fulton 8/23/1899-9/19/1960; Geraldine M. Fulton Kohlmeyer 2/17/1902-1/14/1968; Gardner W. Fulton 6/27/1904-9/7/1975; Carol May Fulton Kirby 2/5/1909-8/15/1935; My Grandfather Howard William Fulton 4/25/1897-9/27/1958

William T. and Barbara L. Fulton had 6 children: Margaret, Howard, Robert, Geraldine, Gardner, and Carol Mae.
            (1) Margaret Fulton, born May 30, 1895 in Chicago and baptized July 15, 1895 at Christ Episcopal Church in Waukegan.  She is noted in the baptism record as being sick.  She apparently died very young as she is not listed in the 1900 census in which Barbara is listed as having had 3 children, 2 of whom are living.
            (2) Howard William Fulton, born April 25, 1897 in Chicago.  He was my Grandfather.   His nickname was “Red”.  Howard went to work full time at the age of 14 in 1911 at the Continental Can Co., founded that year.  I have his original 3X5 work card from 1911.  He eventually worked his way up in management to be the assistant to the plant manager.   He was still working at Continental Can when he died on September 27, 1958.  Howard attended Ryerson grammar school and went to work full time at age 14 to help support the family.  He enlisted in the Navy in World War and served aboard the troop ship USS Powhatan and made five trips across the Atlantic.  He had the opportunity to spend time as a tourist in France after the war while still in the Navy.  He entered the  Navy January 1, 1918 and was formally discharged on September 30, 1921 as a Hospital Apprentice First Class, although he had been home, inactive from some time before that.  After his service in the Navy Howard went back to work for Continental Can Co.  Howard like to play baseball, playing on the Methodist Church softball team into his fifties.  He was a lifelong Cubs fan.  I was only six years old when my Grandfather died.  I remember him, but most of the information about him comes from many conversations with his wife, my Grandmother Elva Mae Christison Fulton, who lived to be 97 years old, passing away on July 9, 2000.   I also have a great deal of information on the Christison family I am happy to share for those interested.  Although he had little formal education, Howard was a very smart man.  My Grandfather Nelson on my Mother’s side happened to work for many years as a foreman in the same Continental Can Plant where my Grandfather Fulton worked and knew my Grandfather Fulton well.   Ironically my parents met independently in a bank years after my Grandfather Nelson had left Continental Can.  My Mother told me that her Father thought Howard Fulton was the smartest man he ever knew.   Stories from my Grandmother Fulton included opinions that Howard was a nice guy, sometimes too nice, as she was often frustrated that he was such a soft touch and would give away money to anyone asking for help.  On the other hand, he was apparently had a tougher side as my Grandmother Fulton told me that during Union negotiations in the 1930’s, the Continental Can sent my Grandfather to negotiate for the Company as they knew he was not intimidated by the Union people.   Both my Grandfather Howard and Grandmother were strong personalities.  My Father has told me that everyone thought that “your Grandmother ran the show, but she ran everything in the house except your Grandfather.”   Dad indicated that Grandpa Fulton liked that Grandma ran most things day to day, but he was not shy about stepping in when he thought it necessary.   Howard Fulton died on September 27, 1958 of a heart attack while recovering from a stroke.
My Grandparents Howard Fulton and Elva Mae Christison met on a blind date and were married on May 14, 1927.  They lived in an apartment in Oak Park and then moved to a house at 3737 Clinton Street in Berwyn, ILL, where they were living when my Grandfather died in 1958.  My grandmother sold the house in 1968.

 Following is from his obituary:
Obit from the Berwyn Life-Beacon, Oct. 1, 1958:
"Howard William Fulton:

Services were held yesterday afternoon in an Oak Park chapel.  Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery.
During World War I, Mr. Fulton served in the United States Navy, making five trips to Europe on the USS Powhatan.  He was a 47-year employee of the Continental Can Co.
He was a member of the Chicago Chapter, Continental Veterans Club; the Old Guard Society, National Canners Association and Allied Industries; The William B. Warren Masonic Lodge; Cicero-Berwyn Elks Lodge, and the John F. Conley Post, American Legion.

Corrine never remarried. She passed away on June 20, 1975.
                        (a) Carol Mae Fulton, born January 18, 1922 in Illinois.  She was born at her parents home at 715 N. Hamlin Ave., in Chicago. They liked central Missouri and took frequent vacations to the Lake of the Ozarks. Carol Mae never learned to drive. Carol Mae Fulton Lamb died of heart failure near Rolla in Phelps County, Missouri on January 23, 1979. Al had previously passed away on October 17,1978. Terry James Lamb died of a heart attack in 1992. He was married to Katherine Lee Bates and had two children Angela Ruth b 1966 and Christopher James b 1971. He had two grandchildren. Barb Lamb married Billy Gene Light and they have two children, Brenda Kay and Beverly Ann and six grandchildren.             (5) Gardner Walter Fulton, born June 27, 1904 in Chicago.  Uncle Gardner also worked for Continental Can Co. in Chicago.  Gardner married Virginia Regina Aluza and they had 3 children; Gardner Wayne, Russell William, and Shirley Jeanne Fulton.   Gardner Walter Fulton died on September 7, 1975.   His wife Virginia died on August 11, 1995.  I corresponded with Great Aunt Virginia early in my research shortly before she passed away.  The information she provided was very helpful.  The following are remembrances of Gardner by his son Gardner Jr.  “He was a very good man with numbers, a strict man with his children, loved all sports, and very much liked to eat ham and pork and drink cold beer.  I was his companion often to many different sporting events including baseball games (he was a Chicago Cub fan), basketball, football, tennie, ice skating, horse racing, and soccer games.  He taught us kids to be sports fans early in life.  He had red hair when he was young, stood about 5’7” tall and normally weighed around 180 to 190 lbs.  He was too heavy for his stature.  He admired the rest of his family, brothers Howard and Bob and sister Geraldine very much.  He was a member of a Chicago mason lodge, an Episcopalian who took us to Sunday school every Sunday for many years regardless of the weather.  He married my mother in 1929.  She often spoke only Polish to her mother, her sister, and her 2 brothers.  My father never understood or spoke any Polish.  He was completely lost but it didn’t matter to him.  He was loved by all of them.  He was very understanding of my strong interest in Spanish and the Spanish culture and helped me as much as possible with my formal education and later progress in business involving Spanish.  He always had health problems such as a bad stomach, bad right knee (an old football injury), but never complained about his problems.  He was a tireless worker for me and the Continental Can Company.  He worked for Continental Can Company for 30 years and then semi-retired as my chief accountant for my export company, Atlantic Export Enterprises, Inc. for 12 years until he had to retire because of a bad heart.”
The children of Gardner Walter and Virginia Fulton are:

Below is a photo of my Grandfather Howard William Fulton as a baby at age one in 1898. Note the long curls. In those days, little boys often had long hair until their first hair cut. My Great Grandmother Barbara Robling Fulton saved the long red locks from my Grandfather's first hair cut and I still have them.

Below is a series of photos of my Grandfather Howard William Fulton probably taken at about age 10 in 1907.

My Grandfather Howard William Fulton attended Ryerson Grammar School at 646 N. Lawndale Ave. in Chicago. He graduated in 1910 at age 13. He then attended one year at Crane High School before going to work full time at age 14 at Continental Can Company in Chicago. Below is the 1910 graduation class photo from Ryerson Grammar School. Grandpa Fulton is seated, front row center above the arrow.

My Grandfather Howard William Fulton 1897-1958 in the Navy in WWI. The post card was sent to his sister Geraldine on Feb. 14, 1919 from France, wishing her a happy birthday. Grandpa served on the USS Powhatan, a troop ship, pictured below.

Below is a photo of my Grandmother Elva Mae Christison Fulton taken in 1916 when she was 14 years old.

Below is a family photo of my Grandparents Howard William Fulton and Elva Mae Christison Fulton and two sons Richard W. and Howard Wesley taken in 1931 in their new home at 3737 Clinton Street, Berwyn, Il.

Below is a photo of my Grandparents taken in their home at 3737 Clinton Street in Berwyn, Ill., in the early 1950's. Notice the clock on the mantle. Grandma told me that she often had many lady friends from her various clubs and church groups over at the house. When Grandpa had had enough of all these people there, he would come into the living room and wind the clock. That was Grandma's signal it was time to get everyone out.
